By the end of the day most of her family and friends had made their way to other parts of the country to escape Hurricane Katrina. Some of their homes were damaged to the point that they can't live in them now, others had houses that were swept away, while others have lost places to sell their work. She and her fellow artists each in their own way has had to rebuild their life. The poetry of Rogi Wieg shines another light on this issue to make us understand what happened with the New Orleans music and how to give all this a place in our hearts. | World Press Photo of the Year 2007 - British photographer Tim Hetherington wins premier award The international jury of the 51st annual World Press Photo Contest selected a color image of the UK photographer Tim Hetherington as World Press Photo of the Year 2007. The picture was taken 16 September 2007 and shows a US soldier resting at "Restrepo" bunker, named after a soldier from his platoon who was recently killed by insurgents. The 2nd Battalion Airborne of the 503rd US infantry is undergoing a deployment in the Korengal Valley in the Eastern province of Afghanistan. The valley is infamous as the site of downing of a US helicopter and has seen some of the most intense fighting in the country. Hetherington's photograph is part of a picture story that was also awarded 2nd Prize in General News Stories. He had traveled to Afghanistan on assignment for Vanity Fair. | Amsterdam en de Oranjes (Amsterdam and the House of Orange) Exhibition -1 March 2008 – 31 August 2008 Amsterdams Historisch Museum (Amsterdam Historical Museum) From the museum website On 1 March 2008 the Amsterdam Historical Museum launches Amsterdam and the House of Orange, an exhibition that surveys the ties which have bound Amsterdam and the House of Orange over the centuries. Relations between Amsterdammers and members of the Dutch royal family have swung from one extreme to the other. While there is great affection for the Oranges in Amsterdam, the city also has its share of republican sympathisers. Sometimes the enthusiasm grows to a crescendo, as during the investiture of Queen Wilhelmina in 1898; sometimes there is opposition, for example against the marriage of Princess Beatrix and Claus van Amsberg in 1966. Amsterdam and the House of Orange examines the relationship between Amsterdam and the House of Orange from the perspective of historical events. From the Alternation of 1578, when Amsterdam finally joined the Revolt against Spain and decided to back the Prince of Orange, to Willem-Alexander and Maxima with their kiss on the balcony of the Royal Palace on Dam Square. | | | | | | | | |
